On one hand, "information" names what a sign does — the relation by which something represents something to someone, as the semiotic tradition, and above all Charles Sanders Peirce, formalised it. On the other, "information" names what things are — an ontological substrate prior to and independent of any interpretant, as the Corpus Informacional postulates it through OIC/U and its states of Passive Stability and Active Stability (EP/EA). These two uses are not obviously equivalent, and their silent conflation is, from the Lakatosian standpoint the Corpus is structured on, a vulnerability of the protected core.

Daqui decorre a semiose ilimitada: cada interpretante gera um novo interpretante, numa cadeia interrompida apenas por razões pragmáticas (o hábito, a acção, a fixação provisória da crença), nunca por necessidade lógica interna. O signo nunca "toca" directamente o seu objecto; aproxima-se dele assimptoticamente.
The decisive clause is that the interpretant is itself a sign — not a static mental state. From this follows unlimited semiosis: each interpretant generates a new interpretant, in a chain interrupted only for pragmatic reasons (habit, action, the provisional fixation of belief), never by internal logical necessity. The sign never directly "touches" its object; it approaches it asymptotically.

Peirce is not a subjectivist idealist. His position — scholastic realism — holds that laws and generalities (Thirdnesses) have objective reality, independent of any individual mind, though dependent on a community of actual or possible interpreters. The real is what a sufficiently prolonged inquiry, conducted by an unlimited community of investigators, would converge on affirming — a communitarian and fallibilist clause that becomes one of the most productive points of friction with the Corpus Informacional, ahead.
